There has been a significantly harder edge to England’s practice at Lord’s this week. It has been noticeable to observers and those involved on the periphery. Coaches have monitored bowlers in the nets much more carefully and practice has been prescriptive rather than self-governed, much of the new direction and oversight seemingly at the behest of the players themselves. As if they want to be chivvied along rather than left to their own devices.
