Weak spots included manufacturing showing only growth of 4,000 jobs and a decline in retail jobs by 12,000. This number would be even greater if it were not for the emerging gig economy. The SHED study found that 31% of adults—about 78 million people—participate in the gig economy. This has serious ramifications on economy, job market and employment figures. How could the the job market be viewed as strong when there are so many people who opt out of looking for a job or are forced into the gig economy?
