JnU suspends teacher, student following death of law department student Abontika

DHAKA, March 16, 2024 (BSS)-Jagannath University (JnU) authorities today suspended management studies department assistant professor Deen Islam and law department student Raihan Siddique Amman from the university following the death of law department student Fairuz Abontika. Earlier, Deen Islam was removed from the post of assistant proctor of the university. The university took these steps amid protests by the students who alleged that Abontika committed suicide as she was sexually harassed by Raihan Siddique Amman, said JnU Proctor Mohammad Jahangir Hossain. Her classmates claimed that Abontika wrote on Facebook that the law department student Raihan Siddique Amman had sexually harassed her and when she informed it to assistant proctor Deen Islam, he verbally abused her instead of taking action against Raihan. A five-member probe body led by JnU teachers’ association president Professor Jakir Hossain has been formed to investigate into the matter.
