Last month, for the first time since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel from Gaza, my wife and I drove from our Tel Aviv-area apartment to the border area where the attack took place. The border region is known colloquially in Hebrew as the “otef” – coming from the Hebrew root for words relating to the verb to envelop or surround. The events of that October have enveloped the lives of all Israelis and the Jewish world.
