The Winnipeg Jets were always going to be a longshot to retain the services of Kevin Hayes. With that in mind, it came as little surprise when the Jets shipped the negotiating rights to the pending unrestricted free agent centre to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night for a fifth round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. With the Jets not expected to sign Hayes before July 1, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff did what he could to recoup an asset in the deal. The Jets acquired Hayes from the New York Rangers at the NHL trade deadline for a 2019 first-rounder and left-winger Brendan Lemieux. Hayes is coming off a one-year deal worth $5.175 million and is believed to be looking for a raise.
