Residents of Jessore have burnt a large effigy of Aung San Suu Kyi to protest the Rohingya persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. People of all walks of life – from students and teachers of different educational institutions, social and political activists to businessmen and different professionals – took part in the demonstration on the grounds of Uposhohor Degree College. The 30-feet-tall effigy was set ablaze around 11am on Monday. They suggested Bangladesh should expedite diplomatic moves to mount pressure on Myanmar’s military and arrange for the safe repatriation of the Rohingya.
