Jenifer Lewis, 62, is a singer and actress who stars on the ABC sitcom “Black-ish.” She is the author of the memoir “The Mother of Black Hollywood” (Amistad) and will sing at New York’s Lincoln Center on Feb. 15. She spoke with Marc Myers. I received my first standing ovation when I was 5. I had just finished singing “You Brought Me From a Mighty Long Way” at the First Baptist Church of Kinloch, Missouri. I had the entire congregation in the palm of my hand.
