Jeff Sessions, meet the asylum seekers who risk their lives to stand up for democracy

Our colleagues at Human Rights First have reported many significant errors in the attorney general's remarks:Sessions claimed that asylum applications are "seldom" denied. However, In June 2017, only 32 percent of affirmative asylum seekers had their claims approved by the USCIS asylum office, and only 43 percent were granted by the immigration courts in fiscal year 2016. The credible fear process is designed to prevent immigration officers, who are afforded the ability to issue deportation orders under expedited removal, from improperly deporting asylum seekers. The bigger problem in our system is that now asylum seekers are routinely denied parole and locked up in detention while their cases are pending. Bill Holston is executive director of the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas.
