With estimated operating income of $15.8 million, FORBES values the Marlins at $675 million, the second lowest valuation for an MLB team. Loria officially paid $158 million for the Marlins in 2002, but in reality he spent a lot less than that. As managing partner of the Expos, Loria increased payroll, resulting in substantial losses. Loria spent $18 million to fund them all, diluting the ownership of the other owners down to 6%. Loria paid $158 million for the Marlins, but the balance was made up with an interest-free loan to Loria that was eventually reduced to $15 million.
