(I own GE shares and have no financial interest in Amazon stock). But as I peered through binoculars at a family of grizzly bears on the shoreline of Glacier Bay, I realized that the idea that connected Immelt's departure and Bezos's big buy is the rebirth of corporate strategy. Perhaps if John Flannery, GE's new CEO, can learn from Bezos what Immelt failed to adopt, GE stock will become a buy -- otherwise, owning Amazon stock looks like the safer bet. Before getting into that, let's take a brief look at how corporate strategy failed GE and how Bezos has reinvented corporate strategy to the benefit of Amazon's shareholders. The basic idea was to identify business units -- such as GE's jet engine and medical equipment lines -- and decide which to divest and which to build.
