Legendary American jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, revered as a pioneer of the “free jazz” movement, has died at age 81. “We are devastated to share that Pharoah Sanders has passed away,” the label wrote. Known for his expressionistic style and unbridled passion on stage, Sanders, nicknamed “Little Rock,” led his own ensembles following Coltrane’s death. “My beautiful friend passed away this morning,” wrote Floating Points in a tweet posted Saturday. Thank you Pharoah.”American jazz critic and music historian Ted Gioia labelled Sanders’s death as a “tremendous loss” of a major jazz innovator.
