Japanese firms fear Hong Kong security law will compromise information security

Over eight in ten Japanese companies in Hong Kong are concerned or very concerned about the national security law that Beijing imposed on the city, as they worry the legislation may worsen information security, the rule of law and the Sino-US relationship, according to a survey by Consulate General of Japan in Hong Kong. The survey was conducted among 304 Japanese companies operating in Hong Kong from July 2 to July 8. Over 70 percent of Japanese companies were concerned about the compromising ‘information security’ by the law. Many respondents were also concerned about the rule of law and judicial independence, the Sino-US relationship, and Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center. Nearly half of respondents said that their business performance had "deteriorated" or "seriously deteriorated" in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter.
