Japan urges HK to hold free and fair election

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said he has “grave concerns” about the issue the Hong Kong government’s postponement of the legislative council election, Reuters reports. “It is important for Hong Kong to develop in a democratic and stable manner, while its free and open structure is maintained under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle. That’s Japan’s consistent stance,” he said. “Holding a free and fair election without delay is an important basis for that. Japan would like to keep an eye on the situation surrounding the Hong Kong legislature election while cooperating closely with other countries concerned.”
