Japan offers PH air defense radar systemBy DEMPSEY REYEShome/News/Top Stories/Japan offers PH air defense radar systemAfter four years of lifting its 50-year ban on defense exports, Japan is offering the Philippines an upgraded air defense radar technology, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Thursday. Tokyo is set to sell Manila the Mitsubishi Electric-made FPS-3 air defense radar system, which Japan’s Self-Defense Forces has used since 1991. The radar system is expected to cost between 1 billion yen and 2 billion yen ($8.87 million and $17.7 million), according to reports from Japan-based financial publication Nikkei Asian Review. According to Lorenzana, the Philippines would be considering Japan’s offer, which is being evaluated by the Air Force’s technical working group. The offer of an air radar system was made amid the militarization by China of several islands located in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea).
