In the 1920s and 1930 it was estimated there were 80,000 maiko and geisha in business, although today only an estimated 1000 remain. Jenny and Sue spent 12 days in Japan late last year, seeing the highlights of Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tokyo and Takayama. Although there has been concerns the exquisite geisha custom is nearing extinction, the women remain modern-day celebrities in Japan.
