The perceived competition between China and Japan for influence in Africa should continue because it has been beneficial to Kenya. For example, during the last TICAD summit in Japan in 2013, Japan pledged $32 billion to support Africa. In 2014, only one per cent of Africa's international trade was with Japan, as opposed to 14 per cent with China. “It is wonderful to be hosting TICAD and discussing the cooperation that we have between Japan and Africa. We are all results-oriented nations.”Since 2012, Japan has pumped Sh450 billion into Kenya on loans, grants and scholarships.
