Natural wines are in vogue. Once so funky and feral that drinking a glass, let alone a bottle, was a struggle. Specialist merchants, including Les Caves de Pyrène and Vintage Roots, have listed them for years, Oddbins showed nine tasty natural wines at its recent winter tasting, and Waitrose and the Wine Society sell them. Don’t expect the usual winey flavours; natural wine has been made by a small-scale producer, not unlike the artisan farmer who sells his produce at a farmers’ market. The weird and wonderful flavours will assault your senses with all sorts of wacky scents and quirky flavours, not always reminiscent of the grape variety, region and country that they come from.
