As an atheist, McWhorter is sensitive to religious encroachments on the lives of unbelievers. He has identified that wokeness appropriates many concepts found in traditional faiths, such as blasphemers (those who have “problematic” opinions) and heretics (those who are targeted by social media mobs). Christina Clark, a Montreal-based director and producer, recently wrote for the Line about her decision to quit the film and television industry because “wokeness” was constraining her creativity. This Liberal “inventory” treats non-white people as if we are so victimized that our individuality is meaningless, like widgets stocked in a basement.
