With hindsight, it may well be that sacking Gove as education secretary was the worst tactical error of Cameron’s career. He is a conviction politician who likes to get things done, hence his vigour and absolute mastery of his briefs first as education secretary, more recently as justice secretary. Now he’s got this far, the last thing he would wish is to see his good work undone by whoever becomes party leader. The 2015 general election was approaching and he had been told Gove was too “toxic” a figure to have as a prominent minister. Because of her sex — certainly not because of her charisma or anything she has achieved — May is sometimes thought of as the new Margaret Thatcher.
