Saudi Arabia and Qatar have waged an information war over the death of a Saudi journalist, trading blows with Twitter bots, trolling and at times propaganda in a fight that highlights the divisions of a realigned Middle East. Once close Gulf Arab friends, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been locked in a diplomatic standoff for over a year. Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi’s death during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has provided another flashpoint for the U.S. allies.
