Jake Gyllenhaal Gives Stephen Sondheim His First Million-Dollar Week On Broadway

The blast of arctic weather last week froze Broadway’s box office, but one industry legend must have been feeling quite toasty. The revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday In The Park With George grossed $1.05 million, buoyed by the star power of Jake Gyllenhaal in his Broadway musical debut. An average ticket will cost you $140, the third most expensive on Broadway, behind Hamilton ($264) and Dear Evan Hansen ($145). Otherwise, Broadway’s collective coffers sank 6.2% from last week to a total of $23.8 million. Part of it was the weather, but the big musicals were also hit by Kids’ Night On Broadway, an annual event that gives 2-for-1 tickets to parents.
