J. Harrison Ghee won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for their portrayal of a gender-questioning musician in “Some Like It Hot”. This makes Ghee the first out nonbinary actor to win the award. Another nonbinary performer, Alex Newell, also won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. When asked about their nomination in a gendered category, Ghee said, “Wherever I am, I will show up as who I am. In the musical, Ghee’s character goes on a path of self-discovery instead of just disguising themselves.
