Chicago is well known for its "Machine", the political organization that's ruled the city in some form almost continuously for the last 80+ years. In this election Chicago overwhelmingly went against the Machine (Preckwinkle is also the current chair of the Cook County Democratic Party). Chicago's "Divided City" Character: Chicago exhibits many of the characteristics associated with the nation’s successful top global cities. But this coming May, Mayor Lori Lightfoot will have to shift to governing and there are big challenges ahead. One facet of Machine political control is fealty to the one with the power; in Chicago that was often seen via routine 50-0 unanimous votes on mayor-supported items.
