Both men were to ride 300 miles to the finish line at the Alamo in San Antonio, with Allen starting from Dallas and Dunne from Fort Worth. The race was a promotion for San Antonio’s Frontier Days, a celebration featuring lots of horses and riders in a downtown parade and four days of rodeo contests at the San Antonio Speedway. The end of the race at Alamo Plaza was an attention-getting kickoff event for the festival. He served during the war as a sergeant in the Veterinary Corps, tending to war horses. After the war, Dunne was an oil-field worker and won multiple rodeo championships.
