One of the most successful musicals in theatrical history, Cats is chiefly a collection of songs and cavortings with next to no narrative momentum. Cats gather amid the ruins of an earthquake-ravaged theatre to select one among them who will be promoted to glorious rebirth. The T S Eliot poems upon which the show is based are witty indeed , even if the declarative reminders that these are "Jellicle" Cats are repeated so often it becomes a sort of sonic toothache. In the end Cats is a show that's more a collection of clevernesses, even audacities, than truly immersive theatre.
