The Defense Department report said the cost of housing the detainees would remain much higher than most federal prisoners even if they were transferred to a U.S. facility. The report estimated the government would save only US$65 million to US$85 million per year with a domestic prison — about US$1.1 million to US$1.4 million per prisoner.
