The so-called “creepy clown” epidemic that started in South Carolina and is now being reported everywhere from Japan to Germany is bad news for actual clowns. Major chain stores are banning clown costumes and working clowns report they are losing business. Hartmier took “much offence” at a column by our witty colleague, Vinay Menon, urging a ban on all clowns, not just the creepy ones. “Life is serious enough and clowns like to bring a break to it and put smiles on people and make them laugh,” Hartmier wrote plaintively. So we respectfully dissent from our colleague and are proud to stand up for the clowns.
