It’s not Caucasian Canadians who most struggle with ‘energy poverty,’ report says

“No one single factor is driving this trend, but the disproportionate incidence of energy poverty underscores the need for an intentional response to address racial inequities,” reads a webpage with the report. On average, visible minorities in Ontario were anywhere from two to five percentage points deeper in energy poverty. “Visible minority households in the cities of Vancouver, Richmond, and Coquitlam are twice as likely to experience energy poverty than Caucasian households,” reads the review. The statistics reveal income played a role in determining who was in energy poverty and who wasn’t. In Vancouver, the differences in energy poverty are lower, but households with recent immigrants faced more energy poverty in every metro city highlighted in the report.
