Monia Chokri, the first-time director who made A Brother’s Love, got her big break as an actor in Dolan’s second film, Heartbeats, which also screened in Un Certain Regard in 2010. Speaking after the big night, Chokri can’t quite express what she felt at the time. “You do your big dive or your big run, and you have 30 seconds to do it. I have no set rule about it.”A Brother’s Love is also a love letter to Montreal – its music, its multiculturalism, even its bagels; Sophia at one point wears a T-shirt from St-Viateur, the famed bakery. But the specificity of place hasn’t stopped it connecting with international audiences in Cannes; reviews in the trade papers tout Chokri as a director to watch.
