Israeli Athlete Wins Historic Silver Medal At World Athletics Championship Marathon

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In a historic achievement Sunday, Israeli athlete Maru Teferi won Israel’s first-ever medal at an international marathon, gaining a silver medal at the World Athletics Championship’s men’s marathon after overtaking his opponents in the race’s final section. Teferi was the vice-champion in the 2022 European Athletics Championship in Munich, and he also contributed to the gold medal won in the team marathon division at the same competition. This remarkable achievement makes Teferi the fourth Israeli to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship. Averbukh won a silver medal two years later with a leap of 5.85 meters in Edmonton 2001. The first Israeli woman to win a medal was Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko, the 2015 world silver medalist in Beijing, who also set the Israeli record in the triple jump with a 14.78-meter leap.
