This was Israel’s breakthrough Olympic year as it qualified for the Pyeongchang team event, a barometer of international skating prowess, and put two men in the singles skating event, as well as qualifying an ice dance couple and pair. Israeli Ice dancers Adel Tankova and Ronald Zilberberg perform their short dance during the figure skating team event on Feb. 11. Aimee Buchanan, a 24-year-old who competed in the women’s singles portion of the team event, is the rare non-New Jersey Israeli. Buchanan fared better than the Detroit-based ice dancers Isabella Tobias and Ilia Tkachenko, who competed last season to secure an ice dance berth in Pyeongchang for Israel. Tobias, the U.S.-born daughter of a New York derivatives broker, was last seen at the Olympics skating for Lithuania.
