Isolated residents and an overwhelmed hospital: Covid-19 hits Western Maryland

Isolated in the farthest stretch of Western Maryland, residents did what they could to prepare for the virus, even when the pandemic seemed impossibly far away. All spring, summer and into the fall, Garrett County saw the pandemic on national news but not at home. Garrett County Health Officer Bob Stephens said some visitors to businesses located along Interstate 68 acted “really nasty” when told to wear masks or leave. ‘Is there any data to show that the virus is being spread via the vacation industry in Garrett County?’ ” said Paul Clayton Edwards (R), chair of the Garrett County Board of Commissioners. “Less people want to identify themselves as covid-positive, so they tend to avoid getting testing,” Boucot said.
