During his New York Fashion Week show on Thursday, Marc Jacobs sent a cast of predominantly white models down the runway in, what else, but multi-coloured wool dreadlocks from Etsy, which ironically may have been the most colour on the catwalk. For many consumers, “street” equals “cool,” but to many others, dreadlocks are not a style to be co-opted, they’re a defining part of black culture with historical value. It’s pretty hard to dispute that white people typically look ridiculous wearing dreadlocks. RelatedEach of these celebrities intended to introduce a stylish trend, but instead appeared foolish and even more contrived than usual. This is an outcome that only continues with Marc Jacobs’s recent show, without any sense of awareness and a direction that – no matter what your motivation is – should be left in the past.
