Isis buried thousands in 72 mass gravesThis image released by the the Mass Graves Directorate of the Kurdish Regional Government shows a human skull in a mass grave containing Yazidis killed by Islamic State militants in the Sinjar region of northern Iraq in May, 2015. Of the 72 mass graves documented by AP, the smallest contains three bodies; the largest is believed to hold thousands, but no one knows for sure. Activists believe there are hundreds of mass graves in Isis-controlled areas that can only be explored when fighting stops. Working behind Isis lines, local residents have informally documented some mass graves, even partially digging some up. "This is a drop in an ocean of mass graves expected to be discovered in the future in Syria,'' said Awad.
