“Interactive TV” has been pretty moribund since the explosive growth of console games and the internet with its ubiquitous two-way communications. But the latest iteration of Black Mirror on Netflix, entitled Bandersnatch, interjects interactivity directly into the apparatus of narrative storytelling. With Bandersnatch, I felt too much like I was watching a device in search of a story. And this is from the extraordinarily talents behind Black Mirror. But Welles’s adage does highlight yet more of the challenges of interactive storytelling.
