In recent months, the persecution of religious groups in China has been making headlines. The picture that these news stories create is one of China as a state that actively interferes with religion one way or another. This much is clear from the treatment of Muslim Uyghurs, Christians and other religious groups. The crackdown on religion in China is not invisible. Indeed, the state of religious freedom in China was a prominent topic during the recent Universal Periodic Review in November 2018.
