Irma developed into a category-5 storm early Tuesday, and it was on a trajectory that forecasters said would likely take it over other Caribbean islands before threatening Florida. It will move early Wednesday near or over portions of the northern Virgin Islands and pass near or just north of Puerto Rico late Wednesday. The hurricane will bring "life-threatening wind, rain and storm surge" to the north-eastern Leeward Islands later Tuesday and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Wednesday, the NHC said. The Dutch government sent about 100 soldiers to the Caribbean islands of St Martin, St Eustatius and Saba to help authorities cope. "Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm and Florida must be prepared," Scott said in a press release.
