Irish and British barristers voice opposition to UK plan to reduce number of jury trialsBy David Lynch, Press Association Political CorrespondentBarristers from across Ireland and Britain have said they are “deeply concerned” by the British government’s plans to curb the number of jury trials. Mr Lammy, also the UK Justice Secretary, wants to limit jury trials to only the most serious offences, and those with a likely sentence of more than three years in prison. In a joint statement, they said: “The Four Bars are deeply concerned that the UK Government is planning to restrict the right to a jury trial in England and Wales. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “This Government inherited a justice system in crisis. “Combined, these measures will free up the space and time needed to prioritise the most serious cases – including those that can and should have a jury trial.”
