Invercargill City Council has proposed continuing with its existing approach to representation, but is asking for public submissions until mid September. Councils are required to carry out a representation review every six years, with the Invercargill council's latest review taking place in 2015 before now. He felt 12 could be a bit “weighty” for the Invercargill council and added a reduction to 10 could help improve efficiency. The panel recommended sticking to 12 councillor positions and a mayor, although the feedback through the submission process was split almost 50-50. Those that supported 12 councillors felt the number was about right with some believing it would help for diversity on the council.
