Invercargill CBD demolition uncovers 13 wells with artefacts

Alix Muir and Braden McLean excavate a well at the former Invercargill Police Station. The demolition of the Invercargill CBD has unearthed 13 wells containing historic artefacts, with more discoveries expected to come. The wells were primarily used for drinking water, fire wells and water for horses, Cropper said. Unfortunately for the lower-level officers, their accommodation did not drastically improve and they were moved into the old timber sergeant’s house, which had been described as being leaky and cold, she said. The demolition of the Invercargill city block, between Esk, Kelvin, Tay, and Dee streets, began in January to make way for CBD rebuild estimated to cost $165 million.
