There are several new reasons to be worried about the Trump administration's understanding of and plans for the federal budget and national debt. By far, the most ridiculous was the recent pronouncement made by Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney about the deficit. This might have been unremarkable had it come from one of the Democrats Mulvaney used to routinely criticize for supporting deficit increases when he allegedly was a conservative Republican member of Congress. It might also not have been newsworthy if the U.S. economy was in a downturn that needed to be addressed with a federal stimulus program. In fact, the CNN interview was so horrendous that I'm creating the Mulvaney Award for any member of the Trump administration and Congress (Republican or Democrat) who in the future reaches these heights (or is it lows?)
