One thing Michael Krezmien noticed about working with incarcerated teens, is that they're not a population that typically catches the attention of education researchers --or educational funding organizations. And this is a problem, he realized, as research suggests that the consequences of failing to address the educational needs of incarcerated juveniles are dire. But by then they had seen enough to realize they were onto a different approach to educating incarcerated teens. They started with apps related to science and technology, wondering whether individual technology apps could bring the lab and science experience into the detention centers for kids. The goal, Krezmien said, is to get the kids to become scientific thinkers, to consider STEM as a career, and to pass the state science assessment, the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).
