A month-long truce in the restive Tigray region of Ethiopia has been broken. The Tigray military command said Ethiopian forces, along with fighters from the neighbouring Amhara region, “started a large-scale attack in the direction of Alamata, southern Tigray.” Getachew Reda, an adviser to the Tigrayan leader, said Ethiopian forces were responsible for launching an offensive against Tigray after a “week-long provocation” in the neighbouring Amhara region. The UN chief made a strong appeal for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the resumption of peace talks between the Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The Secretary-General also asked for the full guarantee of humanitarian access to people in need and the reestablishment of public services. War erupted in Tigray in November 2020 and spilled into neighbouring Afar and Amhara a year ago.
