“Can Algeria be saved?” wonders the International Policy Digest, which rang the alarm bell concerning Algeria’s explosive mix: regime opacity, ailing economy, dwindling oil revenues, widespread corruption, fragile social cohesion and lingering terrorist threat. The author of the analysis, academic and political analyst Mohamed Chtatou, points to the internal rivalry within Algeria’s military junta and its inability to reach an agreement on ailing President Bouteflika’s successor. He added that future prospects for Algeria are shrouded in uncertainty in light of its frail economic structure. This will further undermine Algeria’s social peace, which hinges on state largess and its handouts to a population that is used to generous state subsidies. Algeria’s social peace is on the verge of collapse.
