Intel security flaw puts most PCs at risk

Security researchers Wednesday disclosed a set of security flaws that they said could let hackers steal sensitive information from almost every modern computing device containing chips from Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and ARM Holdings. So, if you include ARM and AMD processors in the mix, pretty much every personal computing device, mobile and cloud server in the world is potentially vulnerable. Security researchers have created two websites providing more details of each bug and what's being done to mitigate them. While on some discrete workloads the performance impact from the software updates may initially be higher, additional post-deployment identification, testing and improvement of the software updates should mitigate that impact. Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich sold some US$39 million worth of stock and options in November, several months after Intel said it was notified by Google's security researchers of the security flaws affecting the company's chips.
