Int’l group asks UN’s OHCHR to act on Echanis slay

MANILA, Philippines — An international group has condemned the killing of a National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant, urging the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to act on the issue. The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) said on Tuesday that they have written a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to report the slay of NDFP consultant and Anakpawis chairperson Randall “Randy” Echanis. However, the wife of Echanis positively identified the body of her husband around Monday night. Previously, former Anakpawis Rep. Ariel Casilao claimed that Echanis, a known peasant leader, was killed during a police raid. Montejo also insisted that he does not know Echanis, and that the victim was not under surveillance.
