Picture by Prem SinghLucknow: A just-married man pronounced the instant talaq on his bride just hours after the wedding with the consent of both families, a council of elders and the city qazi in Garhmukteshwar town of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court has declared the instant talaq illegal but a local lawyer said since both families had agreed to it, there would be no police complaint and therefore no action. With neither side relenting, the panchayat consulted the city qazi and decided the groom would pronounce the instant talaq there and then. The city qazi, Maulana Haji Sayyad Kasimuddin, said: "Everything was done with my knowledge. Lawyer Amarpal Singh said that for a man to be punished for pronouncing the instant talaq, the divorced wife has to lodge a police complaint.
