Designer Ulla Johnson might be a Brooklyn mom, dropping her kids off in clothes of her own design, but her personal style is that of a worldly au pair. Colorful, billowy-sleeved dresses, hand-embroidered blouses and voluminous skirts suggest the aesthetic of someone who’s floated in from a faraway land—not a born-and-raised New Yorker, which she is. But the dreamy bohemian is a vibe she comes by honestly. The only child of two archaeologists, Johnson’s early years included excursions to Iran, Germany and Croatia and other far-flung locales that have since informed the craftwork-focused aesthetic of her clothing.
