Nelson’s Seifried Estate winemaker Chris Seifried says many winemakers benefited from Covid, but they had to be adaptable. Wine sales through mail clubs, canned wine and supermarkets has seen some wineries pull through the year of Covid-19 relatively unscathed – and vintners say it is down to “creative” marketing. According to New Zealand Winegrowers, international demand for New Zealand wine has surged over the past decade, with total export value now reaching a record-breaking $2 billion. LUZ ZUNIGA/Stuff Middle-Earth Wines wine in a can is a favourite with US importers as its easier to recycle than glass. Brightwater Vineyards were prepared for lockdowns with the majority of its business being through mail order clubs around the globe, including US, Singapore and Australia.
