Life story: A legacy of education reform for Dr Elody Rathgen JACK FLETCHERPAULINE SCANLAN Elody Rathgen, an English educator and teacher trainer, died on June 8, 2017. A gifted English educator, both to students and teachers, Elody fostered in others a love of literature and furthered the teaching of the subject. After various high school teaching positions, Elody returned to Christchurch Girls' High School where she became head of the English department. In 1986, Elody turned her attention to teachers, hoping to further the curriculum with her innovative thinking. She took up a position as principal lecturer of English education at the Christchurch College of Education, now part of UC.
